John Mayer was born on October 16, 1977. He's originally from Bridgeport, Connecticut. He is the second born of three boys. His Mom an English teacher, his Dad a high school principal. He attended Fairfield High School.

He became interested in playing the guitar after minor success with playing the clarinet in middle school. After watching Back to the Future, he became fascinated with the guitar so when he was thirteen his father rented him one. After just two years of practice, he began playing at blues bars and other venues in the area.

His album Room for Squares was said to be for his first love Annie Averill. When John was seventeen he was hospitalized for two days due to fast heartbeats. It was there he said. "that was the moment the songwriter in me was born".
