July 14th is Bastille Day! Bastille Day is a national holiday in France. It is a celebration of French Independence, similar to the Fourth of July in the United States.

The Bastille was built in Paris in the 14th century. The word “bastille” translates to “fortress.” During the reign of Louis XVI, it was a prison and a symbol of the King’s power. In 1789 rioters stormed the Bastille and destroyed it. This act of rebellion marked the start of the French Revolution.

Today the French celebrate Bastille day with parties, parades and festivals. Eat your favorite French food or watch your favorite French film to join in on the fun!
